NFC North Win Total Projections: The Most Competitive Division In NFL?

Already the NFC North is looking like it will be the most competitive division in the NFL. TeamFB7 projects which teams will go over and go under their projected win totals in the 2026 season.

The NFC North enters the 2026 season as arguably the NFL’s most difficult division to handicap. All four teams possess legitimate playoff upside, yet each carries enough uncertainty to make its projected win total debatable. Chicago is the defending division champion, Detroit retains an explosive offense, Green Bay returns a playoff-caliber nucleus, and Minnesota has made a dramatic quarterback change.

With no obvious rebuilding team or automatic last-place finisher, every divisional victory could be expensive.

Chicago improved from 5-12 to 11-6 during Ben Johnson’s first season and captured its first NFC North championship since 2018. Caleb Williams now has greater command of Johnson’s offense and an impressive collection of weapons. However, the Bears won seven games after trailing in the final two minutes, face the league’s most difficult schedule based on opponents’ 2025 winning percentage and must replace five of their six busiest defenders.

Detroit finished a disappointing 9-8 and last in the division, but the Lions still possess tremendous offensive firepower around quarterback Jared Goff. Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Sam LaPorta and Penei Sewell form an elite supporting cast. New play caller Drew Petzing and a reconstructed interior line are potential concerns, as is a vulnerable secondary, but Detroit benefits from the division’s most favorable schedule.

How Green Bay and Minnesota Stack Up

Green Bay went 9-7-1 and reached the playoffs, although two major absences complicate its outlook. Micah Parsons begins the season on the physically unable to perform list following a torn ACL, while Josh Jacobs‘ placement on the commissioner’s exempt list creates backfield uncertainty. Jordan Love provides stability, but three road games in the opening four weeks could expose the short-handed roster.

Minnesota may be the division’s greatest wild card after Kevin O’Connell selected Kyler Murray as his starting quarterback. Murray’s mobility and experience should complement Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson. Brian Flores‘ pressure-heavy defense remains dangerous, but improving upon last season’s 9-8 finish depends on Murray’s durability, offensive-line protection and the secondary’s ability to prevent explosive plays.

NFC North Win Total Projections

With four credible contenders separated by narrow margins, these win totals demand more than a simple roster comparison. Schedule strength, injury availability, turnover regression and quarterback stability could ultimately determine which NFC North teams exceed expectations — and which fall short.

Other Division Win Total Projections: NFC South | NFC West | AFC East | AFC North | AFC South | AFC West

Here’s how all four teams stack up, and which ones are positioned to go Over or Under their number (win totals via DraftKings):

Chicago Bears UNDER 9.5 wins

The Chicago Bears could improve offensively and still win fewer games. Williams enters his second season in Johnson’s system after setting a franchise record with 3,942 passing yards and producing 27 touchdowns in 2025. Rome Odunze, Luther Burden III, Colston Loveland and D’Andre Swift provide enough speed, size and versatility to make Chicago dangerous through the air and on the ground. With Johnson designing favorable matchups, this offense has legitimate top-five potential.

The defense compounded that advantage by generating turnovers at an exceptional rate, but it must now replace five of its six leaders on defense. That much personnel turnover creates questions concerning communication, tackling and coverage assignments.

Late-Game Regression Creates the Under Value

The concern is how Chicago reached 11-6. The Bears won seven games after trailing inside the final two minutes and finished 7-4 in one-score contests. Those results showed resilience, but they also reflect an extreme reliance on late-game execution and favorable variance that will be hard to duplicate.

Chicago also moves from one of the easier 2025 schedules to one of 2026’s most difficult. Ten victories are possible because Williams and Johnson could produce an elite offense, but defensive reconstruction, a first-place schedule and normalized close-game results point toward 9-8 and the Under.

Detroit Lions OVER 10.5 wins

Detroit is my choice to win the NFC North. The Lions’ 9-8 finish appears more like an interruption than the beginning of a decline. Goff still directs one of the NFL’s deepest offenses, surrounded by Gibbs, St. Brown, Williams and LaPorta. That group can attack every area of the field, while Sewell anchors a line that should continue providing Detroit with a considerable physical advantage.

Petzing’s arrival as play caller introduces uncertainty, but Detroit doesn’t need to reinvent an offense already built around motion, versatility, explosive speed, and yards-after-catch ability. His primary responsibility is to maintain balance and keep Goff protected. Aidan Hutchinson and a deep defensive front should generate enough pressure to reduce the burden on a questionable secondary.

Schedule Provides the Clearest Path to 11 Wins

Most importantly, the scheduling formula strongly favors Detroit. Its three unique opponents are Arizona, Tennessee and the Giants, while defending North champion Chicago draws Philadelphia, Seattle and Jacksonville. Based on opponents’ projected win totals, the Lions own one of the league’s easiest schedules.

Detroit should be favored in a large majority of its games, and its offensive ceiling gives it more margin for error than any division rival. The number is demanding, but I project 11 victories, an NFC North championship and a narrow Over.

Green Bay Packers UNDER 9.5 wins

This is the closest call in the division because Love gives Green Bay a legitimate quarterback advantage during most weeks. The Packers are coming off a 9-7-1 playoff season, and their young offensive roster retains developmental upside. Love’s arm talent and off-platform playmaking give Green Bay a path to double-digit victories if its most important players return quickly and remain healthy.

Parsons begins the season on the PUP list while recovering from his torn ACL. Green Bay’s defense declined noticeably without its premier pass rusher last season, and even after returning, Parsons may need time to recover his conditioning, explosiveness and usual workload. Jacobs’ placement on the commissioner’s exempt list simultaneously removes the offense’s most dependable runner and physical tone-setter for an uncertain period.

Early Absences Could Leave Lasting Damage

Those losses become more damaging because the Packers play three of their first four games on the road. An early stumble would leave Green Bay chasing the standings before the roster is whole, and six rugged NFC North games provide few comfortable recovery opportunities.

Love keeps the Packers in playoff contention and gives them a ceiling above 10 wins. Nevertheless, the opening schedule and temporary loss of two indispensable stars make 9-8 the most reasonable projection, producing a narrow Under.

Minnesota Vikings OVER 8.5 wins (-120)

Minnesota is the division’s biggest variable, but O’Connell’s selection of Murray gives the Vikings an experienced quarterback with proven production and dynamic mobility. Murray does not need to manufacture offense alone. Jefferson commands constant double teams, Addison can punish isolated coverage and Hockenson supplies a dependable target between the numbers and inside the red zone.

O’Connell’s offensive design should manufacture defined reads, favorable matchups and opportunities outside the pocket, where Murray remains particularly dangerous. His scrambling ability also gives Minnesota an answer when protection breaks down and can convert third downs that otherwise become drive-ending sacks.

Multiple Strengths Create a 9-Win Floor

Flores’ pressure-heavy defense creates protection problems and forces hurried decisions, while Harrison Smith’s return restores experience and communication to the secondary. Murray’s durability, offensive-line consistency and the defense’s vulnerability to explosive plays remain legitimate concerns, but the 8.5 total allows Minnesota to cash without winning the division.

The Vikings possess high-end coaching, an elite No. 1 receiver and a defense capable of changing games through pressure and takeaways. Those strengths provide several paths to nine victories. I project at least a 9-8 finish and a narrow Over.
