For nearly two decades, the AFC South has been chasing February relevance. No team from the division has reached the Super Bowl since Indianapolis following the 2009 season, and no AFC South team has won it since Peyton Manning and the Colts captured Super Bowl XLI after the 2006 season — the longest active championship drought of any NFL division.
But entering 2026, there is evidence the South is finally becoming more than an afterthought.

Jacksonville authored one of the NFL’s biggest turnarounds in 2025, improving by nine victories to 13-4, the second-most regular-season wins in franchise history, and capturing its third AFC South championship. Houston finished only one game behind at 12-5, matching the best regular-season record in franchise history before beating Pittsburgh, 30-6, in the wildcard round.
Those weren’t simply records inflated by beating up on a weak division. The South went 28-20 outside the division, giving it the AFC’s best non-division winning percentage (.583). Jacksonville and Houston combined for 25 victories, while Indianapolis was 7-1 and leading the division halfway through the season before collapsing to 8-9.
More importantly, three franchises believe they have their long-term quarterback in place. Trevor Lawrence is coming off the breakthrough season Jacksonville had been waiting for, C.J. Stroud already has multiple playoff victories on his résumé, and Tennessee is building around Cam Ward after his rookie season. Indianapolis remains the wildcard after last year’s dramatic second-half reversal.
AFC Win Total Projections for 2026
With the South still out to prove something in January, and its trajectory changed after Jacksonville and Houston combined for 25 wins last season, the question entering 2026 isn’t whether the AFC South is improving; it’s whether the betting market has caught up.
And which of its four teams can clear their win total.
Here’s how the AFC South win totals stack up, and where the best Over and Under value may be found in 2026 (Totals via DraftKings):
Houston Texans OVER 9.5 Wins
Houston has established a strong floor, reaching the playoffs in each of the last three seasons under DeMeco Ryans and Stroud, including a 12-win campaign last year. The slightest and most modest offensive improvement makes 10 wins realistic this year.
The key issue is protecting Stroud. His efficiency has dipped since his rookie year due to pressure, which was especially evident in the postseason loss where he threw 4 interceptions. Improving the offensive line was a clear priority.
“I want to see our guys go out and just compete.”

General manager Nick Caserio addressed this by adding veterans Wyatt Teller and Braden Smith and drafting Keelan Rutledge in the first round, reinforcing a unit that was the team’s biggest weakness.
The bet is on Stroud benefiting from better protection. And he doesn’t need to be elite, just more comfortable in the pocket to restore offensive balance.
Houston’s defense already provides a strong foundation, led by Will Anderson Jr., Danielle Hunter, and Derek Stingley Jr., allowing the team to stay competitive even without high-scoring games.
With three straight playoff appearances and a 12-win season already on the resume, Houston’s consistency stands out. The AFC South is tougher, but 9.5 wins still requires only slight regression.
With improved protection and an elite defense, Houston has more paths to 10+ wins than to falling short.
Indianapolis Colts UNDER 7.5 Wins
Indianapolis doesn’t need a major leap to clear this number. The Colts have won nine, eight, and eight games under coach Shane Steichen, so their recent baseline already meets the target.
Last season showed both their floor and ceiling. Indianapolis started 7-1 and looked like an AFC title contender before quarterback issues derailed the campaign, including Daniel Jones‘ Week 14 Achilles injury. The Colts finished 8-9, but the early success still matters.
Jonathan Taylor remains a top-tier running back, giving the offense stability even if the quarterback play is inconsistent. If Jones returns healthy enough to resemble his early-season form, the Colts have enough to reach eight wins again.

There is also organizational pressure. Steichen enters his fourth season without a playoff appearance, and with Carlie Irsay-Gordon now more involved in ownership decisions, expectations are rising.
The AFC South is stronger with Houston and Jacksonville, but this bet doesn’t require a division title. It only requires Indianapolis to hit a familiar range.
They’ve consistently reached at least eight wins under Steichen, and last year’s 7-1 start shows the upside is real.

Jacksonville Jaguars OVER 8.5 Wins
Jacksonville doesn’t need another 13-win season to cash this ticket. It just needs stability in the relationship between quarterback and coach to make nine wins a reasonable expectation.
The Jaguars’ 2025 breakout was unusual. First-year general manager James Gladstone traded up for Travis Hunter, who later suffered a season-ending injury, yet Jacksonville still finished 13-4 after a 4-13 season the year before, marking a major coaching turnaround for Liam Coen.
The key takeaway is that the success didn’t depend on Hunter. The team proved it could win without him, and his return only adds upside to an already functional roster.
The main reason for optimism is Lawrence, who threw for 4,007 yards and 29 touchdowns, added 9 rushing scores, and helped Jacksonville become one of the league’s top offenses in Coen’s system. The Jaguars also closed the year on an 8-0 run, with Lawrence playing his best football.

Are there regression concerns? Sure. Jacksonville lost its first-round pick, made no major veteran splash and overachieved in several close games. So, a step back is possible.
With Coen bringing continuity in his second year, Lawrence providing stability, Hunter returning to the lineup and Jacksonville off a 5-1 AFC South mark, the Jaguars going Over 8.5 seems attainable.
Tennessee Titans OVER 6.5 Wins
Tennessee is coming off a three-win season, so reaching 7-10 only requires a four-win jump. With Ward developing, Robert Saleh taking over the defense, and a reworked roster, that improvement is realistic.
The franchise has been unstable since 2023, with multiple coaching and GM changes under owner Amy Adams Strunk. Now Mike Borgonzi and Saleh finally have a chance to build continuity.
Saleh’s head coaching record is underwhelming, but his defensive background is strong. Tennessee added veterans suited to his system, and even a league-average defense would ease pressure on Ward.
Ward is the key. After drafting him No. 1 overall in 2025 and adding receiver Carnell Tate fourth overall in 2026, the Titans are clearly committed to giving him support. The goal is simple: evaluate him fairly with real weapons around him.

Second-year quarterback jumps are common, especially with better coaching and talent. Ward doesn’t need to be elite, just more efficient in close games.
There are risks, including Saleh’s transition to head coach and Tennessee’s gap behind Jacksonville and Houston.
But 6.5 wins leaves room for mistakes. With Ward’s development, improved weapons, and defensive upgrades, 7-10 is a reasonable step forward.
