Breaking Down the Top High School Football Matchups in Southern California for Week 6
Here are some of the top Southern California high school football games in the area to keep an eye on this week.
Crean Lutheran vs. Tustin
Crean Lutheran had a tough stretch where it lost two games but bounced back with a win in Northern California over Oakdale before its bye week. Arizona commit Caden Jones throws for 258 yards per game with 12 touchdowns and just 1 interception. Braylen Ross leads the Saints in receiving with 646 yards and 5 touchdowns. Cal Poly commit Ahmeer Williamson leads the Saints in tackles and Arizona commit Evan Mack leads the secondary. Tustin recently got back quarterback Ayden Edwards from injury which puts Hayden Koo back at receiver where he is a top pass catcher in the state. BYU commit Jeremiah Williams has 7 sacks and has rushed for multiple touchdowns.
Mission Hills vs. La Costa Canyon
Mission Hills is ranked No. 2 in San Diego and La Costa Canyon is ranked No. 4 so this may be a preview of a future Open Division playoff matchup. Minnesota commit Furian Inferrera is throwing for 249 yards per game for Mission Hills after transferring from Mater Dei. Brayden Roberson is one of the top two-way players in San Diego and is a top receiver for Inferrera. La Costa Canyon plays two quarterbacks, rising sophomore Luke Labrum and senior Jackson Miller. La Costa Canyon’s losses are to good Clovis West and San Clemente teams.
Notre Dame vs. Chaminade
Both teams are 5-0 entering Mission League play. Chaminade has improved offensively in its last three games and sophomore quarterback Jeremy Mellalieu throws for 212 yards per game with 12 touchdowns. The Eagles defense has two high-level pass rushers in Hudson Manning and Kingston Williams. Notre Dame features a top two-way player, Tahj Skinner, who plays quarterback and safety. Skinner has 12 touchdown passes with 1 interception this season and 2 interceptions on defense. Chaminade won this game 27-21 last season.
Servite vs. Orange Lutheran
Both of these teams are 3-2 heading into Trinity League play and are under new coaches this season. King Rich Johnson has 3 interceptions for Orange Lutheran and has returned 2 for touchdowns. Chauncey Washington II is a top safety for the Lancers and Anthony McClure is an underrated defender to watch. Sophomore Ryan Christianson is rushing for 112 yards per game with 5 touchdowns and Chris Flores Jr. has 4 receiving touchdowns. Servite runs the ball well too with Jorden Wells who has 129 yards per game with 9 touchdowns. Allen “Cinco” Kennett leads the Friars in tackles and tackles for a loss and Kamil Pelovello has become a good cover corner despite only really playing the position this season.

Mater Dei vs. Santa Margarita
This was a one-point game last season and should be another low-scoring affair this year. Santa Margarita’s defense has been a top unit in the state despite losing nine starters from last year’s championship team. Freshman Aydan Steen leads Santa Margarita in tackles, sacks and has a blocked punt. Kingston Jimmerson has 4.5 sacks and the Eagles average four per game as a team. Offensively, Adrian Petero has 10 rushing touchdowns and freshman Kiyan Callis is the leading receiver. Fletch Palmer manages the offense well and doesn’t turn the ball over.
Mater Dei has a top notch defense as well, particularly at linebacker and in the secondary. The Monarchs’ leading three tacklers are linebackers DJ Clanton, Mike Davis and Ezekiel Su’a. Danny Lang and Isaiah Danns are high-level corners who will be a challenge for Santa Margarita’s receiving corps. Mater Dei’s offense is less than stellar but freshman Paytyn Guess became the first Monarchs passer this season to throw for over 100 yards in a game two weeks ago. Asir Nembhard runs for nearly 100 yards per game and has 6 touchdowns.
