Georgia is the new No. 1 in the AP Top 25 Poll following its takedown of SEC rival Alabama during Week 6 of the college football season.
The Week 6 edition of the AP Top 25 Poll arrived on Sunday morning, and it’s safe to say that it’s the most conclusive and arguably the most accurate version we’ve seen this season.
We have a new No. 1 in Georgia, who I’ve been saying for weeks is the premier team in the nation, after now No. 7 Texas fell in an upset loss to Oklahoma in Saturday’s Red River Rivalry Game. The Bulldogs received 66 of 70 first-place votes, which is the most decisive regular season vote total in recent memory. No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 5 Indiana earned a single first-place vote each, while No. 3 Miami got the other two.
Georgia is the new No. 1 while UCLA and Kentucky were the biggest movers after key wins on Saturday as the newest AP Top 25 Poll was released Sunday. LSU dropped all the way to No. 22 following its second loss.

Florida and Oregon, which appeared to be firm College Football Playoff contenders just weeks ago, fell out of the polls entirely after embarrassing losses. Kentucky re-entered the polls at No. 15 after falling out a week ago, thanks to a big win against Lane Kiffin and LSU in overtime. No. 12 UCLA was this week’s highest riser among teams who were already ranked last week, rising nine spots from No. 23 after handing Oregon that brutal loss.
Top Takeaways Following The AP Top 25 Poll Week 6 Release

Georgia Is Finally No. 1!
It took over a month of questionable voting, but a 49-yard game-winning field goal from Oklahoma’s Tate Sandell finally showed the AP voting body what I’ve been trying to say about Texas for weeks. And then a few hours later, Georgia’s huge (albeit controversial) win over red-hot Alabama proved what I’ve been preaching about the Bulldogs. Listen, all is forgiven now that all is corrected, and like I said in Week 2 when I originally argued for Georgia over Texas, I’m not so sure the Bulldogs are going to give up that top ranking again this season.
UCLA Still Poised For Playoff Despite Costly Injury

Bob Chesney’s UCLA Bruins earned a season-defining win against Oregon at the Autzen Zoo on Saturday and in turn rose to a remarkable No. 12 in the rankings, but it came at the cost of losing star quarterback Nico Iamaleava for what appears to be the rest of the season. While the initial thought from many was to write off the Bruins’ playoff hopes, I’m not willing to do so just yet. Ty Dieffenbach showed he can at least put the ball on target with his pass attempts on Sunday, and Chesney has proven to be one of the most effective coaches in the country when it comes to getting the most out of his quarterbacks. I don’t believe the Bruins’ already run-heavy philosophy will be altered much with Iamaleava sidelined.
Florida Might Be Sign SEC Gets Too Much Respect
"I love that our fans care enough to boo."

Just a few weeks ago, Jon Sumrall’s Florida Gators were the talk of college football after sneaking into the top 10 with a dominant win over then-No. 4 Ole Miss, which was a week removed from a program-defining win over former coach Lane Kiffin and LSU. I was among the many who bought into Florida that afternoon, but it took them a week to prove they weren’t legit and two weeks to prove the suggestion they could have been legit was laughable to begin with.
I’m also not nearly as high on LSU or Ole Miss as I was at the time of that win, which ultimately devalues what was the anchor win in all arguments favoring Florida. My conclusion from all of this is that while every other conference in the country, including the Big Ten, gets punished for seasons defined by parity, the SEC gets praised for it. There’s one dominant team in that conference this year and it is the new No. 1. Alabama could still be a title threat too, but I’m really not seeing from anyone else in that conference this year, including Texas.
Ohio State Has Chance for Statement Against Hoosiers

Indiana kept its nation-long 22-game winning streak alive by the skin of its teeth against Anthony Colandrea and Nebraska on Saturday, but Nick Marsh did Nick Marsh things to send the Hoosiers back to Bloomington with the victory. With Ohio State coming to town on Saturday, I’m not sure Curt Cignetti’s boys will be so fortunate. Jeremiah Smith has been playing like a man unhinged as of late and all Julian Sayin has to do is throw it in his general direction, and the Buckeyes have gotten a combined 814 yards and 10 touchdowns from the Jackson Two, Bo and Ja’Kobi. I’m pretty confident in my belief that Indiana’s win streak will end this season, and it could seriously happen in a manner that jeopardizes Indiana’s spot in the top 10 entirely.
Voters Are Right To Continue Snubbing Notre Dame
FINAL — Notre Dame 58, Stanford 7
The Irish are 6-0. They have won 16 straight games by double-figures. They have outscored their competition 264-66 this season. Freshman Jonaz Walton set a single-game freshman rushing record with 13 carries for 181 yards.
Up next: @ #8 BYU.

Don’t get me wrong, I think this Notre Dame team is as good as it gets and could very plausibly win the national championship. I also believe that it’s quite fitting that, despite the Irish’s No. 2 ranking, they’ve gotten two total first-place votes. The schedule they’ve been up against is simply not respectable enough for the Irish to get the voting respect they may quite possibly deserve, which is an unfortunate turn considering how far in advance these schedules are put together. If Marcus Freeman‘s group can make a statement against BYU in Provo this weekend, I’d imagine they start getting a little more respect.
