Zay Flowers, Davison Igbinosun Set For Battle In NFL Week 8

Big-name acquisitions of both the rookie and veteran variety alike could shift the Week 8 NFL landscape.

Halloween may be in the books but the holiday weekend might be able to provide a few more tricks and/or treats, especially on the NFL front.

As the league reaches a de facto halfway point, it has seen major shifts in both the momentum and roster varieties. Heroes in both rookie and veteran forms have risen as the the weather has not only brought about hints of late fall and winter but also a chance to paint the postseason picture with a more permanent brand of ink.

Top NFL Positional Matchups To Watch In Week 8

Looking Back: Last week’s top individual matchups

With that in mind, TeamFB7 has five positional matchups to keep an eye on as the November witching hour commences …

S Brian Branch vs. TE T.J. Hockenson

Minnesota Vikings @ Detroit Lions, 1 p.m. ET, FOX

For all the concerns about the Vikings’ offense during their undefeated start, they’ve had solid reliability in the form of T.J. Hockenson, who is heading into another matchup with his original NFL employer. The veteran is fresh off scoring the go-ahead touchdown in the most recent purple showcase and enters their latest excursion as the team’s top pass-catcher with 27 receptions.

That spells trouble for the Lions: Detroit’s defensive struggles have been well-documented this year but tight ends have been able to eat especially well this season. Despite entering this crucial divisional duel with momentum thanks to consecutive victories, the Lions have let up a league-worst 602 yards and 10 touchdowns to tight ends this year.

The return of Brian Branch, who made his season debut after 10 months off due to a torn Achilles, somewhat helped soften the offensive blows in last week’s triumph over Green Bay. Even that, however, wasn’t enough to stop Tucker Kraft from reaching the end zone. While the Lions would undoubtedly like to see more out of middle linebacker duo Jack Campbell and Malcolm Rodriguez in the department, the return of Branch could help stabilize a defense that has kept Detroit out of bigger and better things.

WR Omar Cooper Jr. vs. CB Taron Johnson

Las Vegas Raiders @ New York Jets, 1 p.m. ET, FOX

The world continues to bide its time until Fernando Mendoza makes his professional debut but another national champion from Bloomington has burst onto the scene: Omar Cooper Jr., one of the final picks of last spring’s opening round, dealt with some early injuries but has flourished in the metropolitan slot with 218 yards and 2 scores over the past couple of weeks.

He’ll go up against Taron Johnson on Sunday and the former Bill has plenty to make up for. He’s doing decently well in slot coverage, particularly off the snap, but PFF has him charged with three missed tackles over the last three games, no doubt playing a role in the Raiders’ recent downfall.

While this East meets West showdown feels like a battle of AFC also-rans, it could have lasting repercussions on each side’s immediate future: the Raiders’ fall from grace after a 3-0 start is self-explanatory while another strong Cooper performance could give the Jets some form of assurance and a clearer blueprint heading into the Nov. 10 trade deadline: New York has long sought a consistent complement to Garrett Wilson on offense and it feels like Cooper could be that target. The Jets have reportedly insisted that they have no interest in trading the current top target but that decisions could be better vindicated if there was some form of collaborative offense momentum to go off on.

OT Spencer Fano vs. LB Alex Highsmith

Cleveland Browns @ Pittsburgh Steelers, 1 p.m. ET, CBS

It has been a long time since the Browns-Steelers rivalry has had any lasting repercussions beyond the Great Lakes but not only is first place in the AFC North at the November landmark on the line but a crucial tiebreaker could shift to Cleveland’s favor following its primetime win back on Oct. 1.

The Browns have been nearly unstoppable since, as that win kicked off a 3-1 tally in October. It coincided with a sterling breakout from Spencer Fano, who has hardly looked like a rookie amid the Browns’ shocking turnaround. PFF says the ninth overall pick from April’s draft has let up only five pressures in that span, including but one when the two sides did battle by Lake Erie in a nationally streamed showcase.

Despite posting a three-game winning streak, Pittsburgh has succeeded despite some disappointed pressure stats (third-to-last in hurry rate entering Sunday’s games). The tenured pass rusher Alex Highsmith has been a part of those issues, posting no sacks since Week 2 and just 1 quarterback hit in that same span. Perhaps a full circle moment to where those struggles arguably began can help him get back on track and give the Steelers a more well-rounded team as they seek to create a more secure postseason future.

WR Zay Flowers vs. CB Davison Igbinosun

Baltimore Ravens @ Buffalo Bills, 1 p.m. ET, CBS

The Baltimore-Buffalo battle has the makings of an offensive slugfest, a classic “first stop/last one with the ball wins” situation that gets plenty of play on NFL Network during the offseason. Only exacerbating that feeling is the return of Ravens thrower Lamar Jackson, who returns from three-game ankle injury departure.

While Baltimore lost ground in the tight AFC North race, the loss of Jackson did little to stifle the momentum of Zay Flowers, still stationed sixth in receiving yards and fresh off a 137-yard performance against Cincinnati (his best since getting 150 in Week 1 in Indianapolis). That makes for quite the assignment for Davison Igbinosun, a second-round rookie that has conducted himself well in the early going.

Igbinosun has effectively replace Maxwell Hairston as the Bill’s top cornerback. At the start of the month, quarterbacks had a 115.2 passer rating when targeting his assignment but that number has dipped to 91.7. The Ohio State alum also has a team-best 7 pass breakups, including three in the Bills’ most recent victorious excursion against the Rams. Locking down Flowers would be another sterling flex of power and offer a hint of difference in the Bills’ latest championship attempt.

OG Quenton Nelson vs. DT Jeffery Simmons

Chicago Bears @ Seattle Seahawks, 8:15 p.m. ET, ESPN (Monday)

The NFL trade deadline never seems to generate the hype its equivalents on the court, diamond, and ice get. This edition, however, has already featured some sizable, seismic blockbusters and they’re ironically set to do primetime battle in the trenches come Monday.

Quenton Nelson and Jeffery Simmons have had their share of physical battles in the AFC South, each serving as silver linings amid the respective mediocrity of the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans. With both teams bottoming out, their services now land in the hands of NFC contenders looking to make a statement in front of a national audience.

It’s no secret where each man can make his impact most felt in the early going: Simmons can help fortify the Bears’ rushing defense (which is one of 11 in the league giving up at least 4.4 yards per carry) while Nelson can generate some early momentum for a middling Seattle run game set to soon welcome back Zach Charbonnett while affording the embattled Sam Darnold a little extra protection.
